Prep Chess Team Earns 11th State Title

Congratulations to the Chess Team for winning the Mississippi Scholastic Chess Association's State Championship. This is Prep's 11th state championship. Congratulations to Team Captain Tad Cochrane, top performers Ben Van Pelt and Mitchell Boulanger, Ty Thompson, Khue Tran, Hanson Woo, Abi Burton, Mary Katherine Gowdy, Graham Roberson, and Andrew Lott. Prep team members took 5 out of the top 10 spots in the individual standings. Khue Tran earn the trophy for top female player.

Jackson Prep/Millsaps Tuition Exchange Program Expanded to Include Else School of Management

Jackson Prep is pleased to announce an amendment to the Tuition Remission and Scholarship Agreement between Jackson Prep and Millsaps College. The new provisions grant a 20% discount to the Else School of Management to any full-time employee of Jackson Prep, any parent of a current Jackson Prep student, and any Jackson Prep alumni enrolling in certain graduate school programs. Prep 8th Grade Team Wins National Science Bowl's Regional Competition

Fifteen 8th grade students traveled to the MS School of Math and Science last weekend to compete in the National Science Bowl's regional competition.  One of the 5-person teams won the competition and will advance to the  National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. this April.  The 5-person team is pictured here, from left: Eliza Burnham, Nora Beth Hetzel, Charlie Ott, Alex Gibbs and Jack Tribble.  The team is coached by Tracye Eakes. The National Science Bowl, sponsored by the United States Department of Energy, began in 2002 as a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of middle school students who compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of math and science. This was Jackson Prep’s first appearance in the Regional Middle School Science Bowl.  Twenty-eight teams from fourteen schools participated in the event, including two other teams from Jackson Prep.  As the winner, Jackson Prep’s team received an all-expense paid trip to the national event, which will be held April 30 – May 4, 2015.

First Lady Deborah Bryant Addresses JP Students during Young Women in Science Symposium

Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant was at Jackson Preparatory School this week to speak to female students in grades 9-12 as part of the Young Women in Science Symposium.  The Symposium, created this year by honors chemistry instructor Lauri Byrd, focuses on providing role models for young women and reaching individual potential in science as a career. Griffis Wins JH National Geographic Bee

Edwin Griffis, an 8th grader, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Wednesday, January 28, and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, $500 in cash, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.  The school-level Bee, at which the students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 27thannual National Geographic Bee.  Edwin competed against the top scorers in grades 6-8 at Prep and will now take a written test.  The top 100 scores in the state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on March 27. Jackson Prep and Millsaps College have recently agreed to a Tuition Remission and Scholarship Program to begin August 1, 2015. Under the program, dependents of full-time faculty and staff of Millsaps College who qualify for 
admission to Jackson Prep will be offered a 30% tuition discount. In exchange, Jackson Prep graduates will

Jackson Prep Service Club recently sponsored Camp Kandu Week to raise awareness and collect art supplies for The Diabetes Foundation Of Mississippi camp for diabetic children. Camp Kandu is a semi-annual, two day camp merging fun and education for diabetic children and their families. Ross & Yerger Donates CPR Training Kit to Jackson Prep

Students at Jackson Preparatory School received a life-saving gift from Ross & Yerger. The insurance agency partnered with the American Heart Association to purchase a CPR Anytime Kit to donate to Jackson Prep. Ross & Yerger’s CEO, Dudley Wooley, was at Prep Monday evening, along with American Heart Association’s Jennifer Wellhausen and Liz Young, to present the CPR Kit. Dr. Roger Parrott, Belhaven University President, and Dr. Jason L. Walton, Jackson Prep Head of School, executed a first-of-a-kind Memorandum of Understanding on November 24, 2014, outlining the terms of a Tuition Exchange and Scholarship Program. The Tuition Exchange Program begins August 1, 2015, and will mutually benefit both institutions.  Under the program, dependents of full-time faculty and staff of Belhaven’s main campus in Jackson who qualify for admission to Jackson Prep will be offered a 30% tuition discount. Jackson Prep Pilots Corporate Telehealth Program for Employees

Beginning January 1, 2015, Jackson Preparatory School employees can see an urgent care provider without leaving the workplace. Under an agreement with University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Jackson Prep will offer Corporate Telehealth to its faculty and staff as an additional option for healthcare. AP Scholar Awards Granted to 35 JP Students

Jackson Prep congratulates its students who earned an AP Scholar Award in 2014.  The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams.

Paul Vegas Ott (Class of 2014) was named National AP Scholar, an academic distinction granted to students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction Awards were granted to Christian Coker, Robert Frey, Grace Hubacek, Kimberly Hydrick, Thomas Joyner, William Meadows, Kaitlyn Myers, Paul Vegas Ott, Sarah Addison Phillips, Jesse Pound, Wilkes Skelton, Elizabeth Thiel, Luke Wise, and Amy Woods.  These awards are granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. 

AP Scholar with Honor Awards were granted to Anna Buchanan, Tad Cochrane, Collin Hoffmann, Michael Osborne, and Claire Robinson.  This distinction is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) identifies academically promising 7th graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school.  Those students are then invited to take the SAT or ACT as a 7th grader.  Jackson Prep had 80 students participate in the program this year.  Of those, 29 qualified for state recognition, having scored at or above the national average of high school junior or seniors who tested on at least one part of the SAT or ACT.  One Jackson Prep 7th grader, Abigail Pittman, qualified for grand recognition, scoring at or better than 90% of high school juniors or seniors who tested.  Pittman is invited to a special recognition ceremony at Duke University.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest that begins at the school level.  This is Prep's third year to participate.  Ninth grader Lawson Marchetti was the winner of our school –wide contest. He then went to the Central Region Contest and was one of three semi-finalists to qualify for Mississippi’s State Contest.  In the State Contest, broadcast on MS Public Broadcasting I March, Lawson placed second.

Prep senior Sarah Adison Phillips attended the Junior Classical League State Convention at Millsaps College, along with approximately 400 other students from around the state. Phillips won numerous awards and distinctions at the Convention, and was recently recognized by Jackson Prep. Phillips was a member of Prep's Certamen (Quiz Bowl) Team, which won first place. Phillips also won first place in Advanced Mythology; Advanced Omnibus; Mottoes, Phrases and Abbreviations; Maps; and second place in Advanced Vocabulary.

Jackson Prep's Christian Studies Program provides a course of study for any student interested in the history, development and influence of the Christian faith in society. In order to receive this special diploma distinction, a student must earn three full credits in the Christian Studies curriculum. Sydney-Kirk Patti Recognized for Community Service

Jackson Prep senior Sydney-Kirk Patti was recently recognized for her outstanding commitment to community service. Sydney-Kirk received the Platinum Community Service Award for providing 200 or more hours of community work during one calendar year. Sydney-Kirk has faithfully served the Clinton Visitor's Center for the last six years, and contributed 232 hours this year. Sydney-Kirk is also the recipient of the prestigious President's Volunteer Service Award, Silver Level, given on behalf of the President of the United States by the President's Council on Service and Civil Participation. Sydney-Kirk was also recognized as Outstanding Senior Service Club Member for most volunteer hours in her class.

Cum Laude Society Inductees Announced

The Jackson Prep chapter of the Cum Laude Society inducted twenty-five members from the graduating classes of 2014 and 2015. Cum Laude Society is an honorary society modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, which encourages and recognizes true scholarship while striving to encourage qualities of excellence, justice, and honor. Prep Seventh Grader Selected for State Honor Choir

Catherine Watson, a 7th grader at Jackson Prep, along with 400 other junior high students from across the state, auditioned to participate in the Mississippi All State Junior High Honor Choir.  She was chosen as one of the 100 students to sing with this choir. The all state honor choir performed at the Mississippi ACDA/MMEA convention on April 5. She is a member of the Patriot Singers at Jackson Prep, under the direction of Susan Cokely.

Jackson Prep Congratulates Head Football Coach Ricky Black

On April 29, Ricky Black will be inducted into the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame. In 391 games as a head high school football coach at three schools, Black has amassed a record of 320 wins and 71 losses. As head coach, his teams have won many titles, including eight state championships at Jackson Prep. During a career spanning 43 years, Black has served as a teacher, an assistant football coach, a head football coach, a head track coach, a head  basketball coach, an athletic director at four high schools, and football coach at one state university. Black was twice awarded "Jackson Metro Coach of the Year" in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, he was also selected "Mississippi Coach of the Year." In 2012, Black was selected to the Holmes Community College Sports Hall of Fame.

These four seniors are nominees for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which recognizes and honors the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The Scholars represent excellence in education, and are honored by the President of the United States. These Prep students will compete to be one of the two students selected from Mississippi to be named as Presidential Scholars, one of the Nation's highest honors for high school students.

Karl Hatten Selected to Perform in Honor Choir in Nashville

Junior Karl Hatten was recently selected to perform as part of the National Association for Music Education's annual professional development conference October 27-30, 2013 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Conference Center. Music educators from across the United States are expected to come together in the place "Music calls home" to network, learn, and celebrate music education. More than 600 students representing 46 states will perform in NAfME's annual All-National Honor Ensembles Concert. The concert will include performances of the All-National Honor Orchestra, Honor Concert Band, Honor Mixed Choir, and Honor Jazz Band.

Junior Ben Van Pelt Receives State Athletic Honors

Ben Van Pelt received the Male Amateur Athlete of the Year Award for CrossFit from the State Games of Mississippi. Van Pelt participated in the State Games in June, wining a gold medal in the teen division of the CrossFit competition. Van Pelt is an 11th grader at Jackson Preparatory School and trains at CrossFit 601 in Ridgeland. The State Games of Mississippi is a member of the National Congress of State Games and is affiliated with the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Eighty Prep 7th Graders qualify for Duke TIP program

ONE-ACT PLAY "CRUSHED" AUDITIONS HELD

George Dennehy recently spoke to Jackson Prep's junior high student body as part of the Global Leadership Institute.  Dennehy was born without arms, lived in a Romanian orphanage, and was adopted by a family in America through Bethany Christian Adoption Services. He plays the guitar with his feet and sings songs of hope. Emily Claire Herring, a 9th grade Jackson Prep student, recently participated in How Will you Choose to Make Your World a Better Place?  Medgar Evers:  Honor His Life, Live His Legacy Student Art and Writing Competition.  The competition was conducted by the Mississippi Museum of Art, in partnership with The Links, Inc., Lefleur's Bluff Chapter.  Herring was awarded Second Place in the competition.

PREP ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2014 NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS

The Jackson Preparatory School Class of 2014, with 10 National Merit Semifinalists, continues a Jackson Prep tradition of outstanding performance in the National Merit Scholarship program. Since 1970, Jackson Prep has produced 547 National Merit Semifinalists. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

SARAH SANTUCCI NAMED AS STATE AP SCHOLAR

The College Board recently announced Sarah Santucci, Jackson Prep Class of 2013, as the female State AP Scholar in Mississippi.  The State AP Scholar distinction is granted to the one male and one female student in each state with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average grade on all AP Exams taken.  Santucci also received the National AP Scholar award and the AP Scholar with Distinction Award.  Santucci is currently attending Princeton University.

Jackson Prep students recently participated in "Mississippi Glowing for Christ."  The 82-day event by Mission Mississippi and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) continues a tradition that started 20 years ago when a cross was raised in Jackson as a symbol of the unity found in Jesus Christ. On August 7, 2013, a lighted cross began its journey and travel across all 82 counties in Mississippi - to celebrate 20 years of the ministry of Mission Mississippi, in racial reconciliation and healing. Jackson Prep would like to welcome Ryan Sherman as the new Director of Annual Giving.  Ryan is a Jackson native, who attended Hillcrest Christian School.  After graduating Hillcrest in 1997, Ryan attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 2001 with a degree in communications. For the last 9 years, Ryan and his wife Melissa have lived in Birmingham, Alabama, where Ryan worked for the American Red Cross.  Ryan and Melissa recently relocated back to Jackson along with their two children, Mattie and Jackson.

MAIS AAA All Sports Trophy

During 2012-2013, Jackson Prep teams won a total of seven state championships, capping the year off by bringing home the MAIS All Sports Award, which recognizes the Association’s most successful and complete athletic department.  This is the eighteenth year out of the award’s nineteen-year existence that Prep has earned this honor.

The Jackson Prep 2013 Jesse Howell Award scholarship was awarded to Anna Grace Buchanan at the Senior High Honors Forum. The Jackson Prep PAT Board established the Jesse Howell Award in honor of Jesse Lee Howell, Jr., who served Jackson Prep as headmaster from 1970-1987. This scholarship award is given annually to a junior who has exhibited scholarship, strong moral character, participation in school activities, and involvement in the community.

Prep juniors Sarah Neal Secrest and William Townsend were honored at Senior High Class Day as the 2013 recipients of the Sarah Elizabeth Shelton Scholarship. The endowed scholarship was established in memory of Sarah Elizabeth, a 1994 graduate of Prep, by her family. The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding juniors who demonstrate the desire to unselfishly serve others and who are dedicated to high achievement in academics and other activities.

Tenth Grader Wins Global Citizen Scholarship

Tad Cochrane, a tenth grade student at Jackson Prep, has won the 2013 Global Citizen Scholarship Award for his achievement on the National Spanish Examination and for his excellent skills in the Spanish language. This national award, valued at $2,000, is given each year to 16 students from across the United States who become eligible by earning high scores on the National Spanish Examination and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In July, Tad will be traveling with 15 additional winners to study at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition for a two-week Spanish immersion program. Cochrane is pictured with his Spanish teacher Hunter Upchurch.

Josh Williams Signs With Lipscomb University

On the heels of leading Jackson Prep to the MAIS overall state championship in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2013, Josh Williams has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lipscomb University men’s basketball program. Leading the Patriots to a 73-5 record in his two years at Jackson Prep, Williams averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game under Coach David Horner. He was named the MAIS Boys Player of the Year in 2012 and a two-time conference player of the year. On a recent trip to New York City, Jackson Prep senior high students visited with leaders in the world of finance, retail, advertising/marketing, medicine, media, engineering, and ministry. Anna Frances Robinson, a junior at Jackson Preparatory School, has been selected as The Distinguished Young Woman of Rankin County 2014. Anna Frances was also presented the Self Expression Award, as well as the Interview Award. This summer she will compete for the title of Mississippi's Distinguished Young Woman in Meridian. Anna Frances is the daughter of Steve and Kay Robinson of Flowood.

Jackson Prep competed in the Mississippi Science and Mathematics Tournament at Mississippi College Thursday, February 7, 2013.  Jackson Prep won first place with the twelve team members' combined scores in math, biology, chemistry, and physics. 2012 Earthwinds Named Crown Finalist

Jackson Prep’s Earthwinds 2012 has been named a Crown Finalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's Annual Critique of Literary Magazines. Finalist status guarantees either a Gold or Silver Crown, to be awarded in March at Columbia in NYC. Earthwinds 2012 also won several Gold Circle Awards - Closed (Traditional Form) Poetry, CM, Rachel Carlton; “Road Signs,” Photography Portfolio, 3rd Place, Melissa Archer; Literary Portfolio, 1st Place, Madison Portie; Overall Design, 1st Place, Earthwinds 2012. Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student print or online medium for overall excellence. Both Gold Crown and Silver Crown Awards are given each year. Two Jackson Prep seniors have been named STAR students by the Mississippi Economic Council’s M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation, sponsor of the STAR program. STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Student. Each STAR Student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, the classroom instructor who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement.
